⏹️ Sweeping Federal Environmental Review Changes Take Effect August 18, 2025
Federal regulators — including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Department of Transportation (DOT) — will implement major amendments to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process effective August 18, 2025. These changes overhaul how permit applications are reviewed, update public input requirements, and alter compliance standards for any project requiring federal approval. This shift impacts small and midsize businesses in construction, energy, real estate, and environmental consulting. Companies planning new projects should promptly review the revised guidelines, as timelines, reporting expectations, and opportunities for public comment are all subject to new rules.
⏹️ Colorado Businesses Face New Federal Beneficial Ownership Reporting Rule in 2025
On January 1, 2024, nearly all small businesses across the U.S. were mandated to report their “Beneficial Ownership Information” (BOI) to the Department of Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). This new rule under the Corporate Transparency Act aims to curb illicit activities by making company ownership more transparent but comes with serious non-compliance risks: failure to report accurate or updated information can result in federal fines of up to $500 per day. New businesses formed in 2024 have 90 days to file, while existing companies must report by year-end. Colorado's Office of Economic Development is urging local businesses to act now and participate in upcoming training sessions to avoid unexpected penalties and stay in good standing.
Businesses face a rapidly growing threat from AI-generated deepfakes—convincing fake videos, audio, and images used by criminals to impersonate executives or partners. In 2025, deepfake-enabled business email compromise (BEC) is costing U.S. companies billions, as attackers use synthetic media to dupe employees into wiring funds or disclosing confidential information. Even small organizations are targets: scams can involve “urgent” video messages from a fake CEO or audio requests for payment.
A robust risk response begins with staff awareness. Train employees to recognize suspicious requests — even those that appear to come from trusted voices. Implement multi-factor authentication for approvals and set clear escalation procedures when faced with unusual instructions. Investing in deepfake detection tools and regularly reviewing your incident response plan can make the difference between a close call and a major financial loss.
Don’t let deepfake innovation catch your business off guard; proactive defense is now a risk management essential!
